A while ago BMC Industries stock of Minnesota quickly increased in value 36% for a few hours because Internet Message Board rumors said IBM might buy BMC.
Only, the rumors were about Houston-based BMC Software, not Minnesota-based BMC industries. The New York Stock Exchange demanded that BMC Industries issue a statement about the massive trading of shares and the run-up in stock price.
BMC Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Hattara was quoted, "I cannot believe that people would be making investments in the wrong ticker.... I can't believe that people are buying 50,000-share blocks and not have a clue what they're doing. That's $2.5 million dollars."
